I'm pleased to announce that our ISBAB president, Dr. Chang-Hsien Yang has been elected as an Academician of Academic Sinica, Taiwan.
Academician Yang is an expert on Plant Molecular Developmental Biology and orchid Biotechnology. Academician Yang said that studying the regulation of flowering and flower development is a very competitive research field in international plant science. After returning to Taiwan to teach in 1994, he began to engage in flower biotechnology research. By studying different plants such as orchids, lilies, and Arabidopsis, he focused on functions such as flowering, flower shape regulation, gametophyte development, flower senescence, and withering. Especially on the key genes and their molecular regulatory networks.
In the study on the regulation of orchid flower shape, Academician Yang found that the formation of calyx/petals/labia is regulated by L and calyx/SP protein complexes. The "labial complex" (L complex) promotes labia formation, and the "calyx/SP complex" inhibits labia formation. Which has innovative and breakthrough contributions, and was published in the top international nature series journal "Nature Plants" in 2015. It was not only selected as the cover story but also selected as a research highlight that week. It immediately received Widely reported by media in various countries.
Subsequent research found that the B and AGL6 MADS genes in the SP and L complexes of the "perianth code" not only have the original important function of regulating the formation of lips, calyxes, and petals in floral organs but also regulate the color and calyx of flowers. The multiple functions of aged petals and fallen stems. This breakthrough and innovative research result was published in Nature Communications, another top journal in the Nature series, in 2021. The above achievements have earned him honors such as the National Science Council Outstanding Research Award, the Ministry of Education Academic Award, and the Lifetime National Lectureship. Its research results have been recognized and valued by relevant fields and countries at home and abroad.
